It’s been a while since I posted here. I get busy and actually forget that my multiple blogs are floating around in internet space. Ah procrastination and memory issues. I could blame it on my ADD, post traumatic stress disorder or the fact that I spend a lot of time with people with dementia. Or I could just come clean and say… “Oops. I did it again!” Thanks Brittney Spears. I’ll steal that line from you. I am recommitting to more frequent blog posts. Hold me to it! Someone? Anyone? Buheler?
I actually had a show on Sunday night at The Comedy Palace in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego. It was another successful show put on by local comedian/producer/promoter, Pman. He’s a talented comedian and good guy. Very funny and generous with fellow comedians. The show was amazing! One of the best. High energy comedians and a crowd that was with us every step of the way. I had a good set. I threw in some new material towards the end. Most did okay, but one joke got complete silent treatment! It’s so weird when that happens Laughs, laughs, laughs then… crickets. I think the joke has potential if I find a way to lighten it up and make it funnier. It is really dark. Too dark so that I don’t think people know it is okay to laugh at it. It’s personal and painful material. In my head it was funny. Out my mouth to the very lighthearted audience that just wanted to have a good time, it was way too much! Lesson learned.
Learning as a comedian is an interesting journey. And although we can compare notes and may have similar experiences, it is different for each individual performer. Like everything in life, there is more than one way to do it. I think that is an important thing for everyone to note about life. Don’t limit yourself! Listen to feedback, learn from others, but most importantly, learn from yourself and your own experiences. Then… within the confines of realism only, do it your way! Thanks to a combination of stylin’ Frank Sinatra and fast food mogul Burger King for that one!
After taking June off, I only performed twice in July. I still have a lot of commitments that interfere with me jumping in with both feet again. In the next few months though I think things will settle down and I will be able to do more shows. If you want to get on my email mailing list and stay up on all things comedy a la Sindi, send me your first and last name and email address. Here’s where to send it…. firstname.lastname@example.org. Why Wild and Tame you might ask? Wild and Tame Comedy are the comedy shows I produce. Wild and Tame Music are the music shows I produce. Wild and Tame Wellness and Communications is my business helping people and animals.
Thanks for reading and have a great day comedy lovers in and out of San Diego County!!! – Sindi
Haven’t posted for a while, so we’ll play Komedy Ketchup. The show on April 4th with headliner, Rosie Tran was great! She’s very funny. The night was also an important learning experience. Not only as a comedian, but also as a host and businesswoman. I see every experience as a learning opportunity. Watching and listening to others is a great way to learn, as is, of course performing myself.
On Saturday, April 14 I did my first double header. At least my first one on stage! That may have been inappropriate. Sorry. Both shows were a blast! I was actually really wiped out during the day and questioned whether I could pull it off. I started to get my energy back as soon as I was on my way to my first gig. Comedy is rejuvenating! At 5:00 pm I performed on comedian, Pman’s show at The Comedy Palace. Pman is a supportive producer and host. He puts on a great show! I saw several comedians that I had never seen perform before, including the very funny Bombo Belford. I also saw one comedian that I hadn’t seen for a while, Dave Wright and he was on fire! Following this show I had a few hours before I needed to be in downtown San Diego at the Mad House Comedy Club.
The LA based producer of the Mad House show, Mike Mitchell had asked me to host that night, as I had on his April 4th show. He produces a lot of shows. That night he had two in LA, so he couldn’t actually be at the show in San Diego. Because of this, he had me run it, as I also had done on the 4th. It reminded me of when I was producing and hosting my Wild and Tame Comedy & Music shows. It was another fun time and another business learning experience. The first show of the night had gotten me high. The comedic high continued through the second show and into the next day. Laughing and the energy of comedy is so transforming. Uplifting and energizing!!!
A comedian dropped out of Mike’s show at The Comedy Store in La Jolla, Tuesday, April 17. Mike asked if I could replace them. He offered me a guest spot, which I happily accepted. It was an okay set, but I felt a little off. Mainly because I wasn’t sure what material I wanted to do. I was not fully committed.
I am actually going through another period of evaluating my material. Examining what I want to present and how I want to present it. One of the things I love about performing stand-up is what an amazing personal growth experience it is. Love it!!!
I’m excited about my upcoming shows. I will be performing on Yuri Bohlen’s show on Wednesday, April 25 at Jimmy Z’s/Poway Fun Bowl. It’s actually a combo of an open mic and booked show. Yuri is a really nice guy. He provides an opportunity for whoever wants to perform. It’s a fun time. Then on Wednesday, May 2 I will be at The Comedy Palace on an all women show. Wednesday, May 16 I will be back at the Mad House downtown. I’m heading up to LA on Thursday, May 31 to perform at the Beauty Bar in West Hollywood.
If you want to get social with me, you can follow me on Twitter and like me on Facebook. I also send out an email newsletter announcing upcoming shows. Want to get on my email mailing list? All I need is your email address! Email me at email@example.com and let me know you want to be added to my comedy newsletter. I also send one out related to my work with animals, so please specify COMEDY or ANIMALS or both. Thanks y’all!!! Hope to see you at a show soon!!!
Wednesday, April 4 I will be hosting The Comedy Explosion at The Mad House Comedy Club in downtown San Diego. I was already excited, but am now even moreso since learning about the amazing line-up of talent I will be introducing. I knew there would be a number of talented local comedians on the bill, including energetic funny man Carlos Kramer. who you may have seen him on the show American Chopper. Come to find out… not only do we have Carlos, but the show’s headliner is ROSIE TRAN!!! Visit her website at www.rosietran.com.
I first learned of Rosie Tran last year when I performed on Rick Rome and Just Mikey’s show at Liam’s Irish Pub in Colton, CA. Side note… Rick Rome is an awesome producer and great to work with, as is Just Mikey. If you’re in the area check out their Liam’s show! It’s every Tuesday night and a really fun, no cover, no drink minimum show. They produce other shows in that area also, including shows at The Green Frog in Highland, CA. Anyway… ADD sidetrack… Rosie did a set one night when I was at Liam’s. I was like, “who is the funny woman?!” I was thoroughly enjoying her set when another comedian asked to talk with me. I didn’t want to be rude to the comedian wanting my attention or the comedian on stage. I don’t like walking out during another comedians set and I especially didn’t want to walk out on this one, because she was awesome! Turns out the guy who pulled me away wanted to make a connection with me in hopes of getting a gig in San Diego. Totally cool and understandable. Seemed like a good guy and we had an interesting conversation, but I was distracted because I wanted to get back to my seat by the stage. I was able to return and enjoy the rest of Rosie’s highly animated and entertaining set.
After Googling Rosie Tran, I learned that she had quite a resume! She is a LA entertainer that had performed for the troops and had appeared on TV, among other successes. So… I am excited to be able to watch her headlining set in its entirety on Wednesday, April 4. I hope you’ll join me!
